Hundro check out the last one, Invisible On Report, here & here. Guitar & bass, Yamaha drum machine, tiny Cube amp, & throat are his alchemical materials. Since the 2013 demise of the Blanche Blanche Blanche & Big French groups where he was ponying up the lead, Colins been kicking up a lot of dust between these Hundro tapes & the Exxo Riders, Jesus Jim & now Skyn Twynz groups. Its hard to place this music, emanating as it is from somewhere deep in the wall behind & between a Trux poster, a cassette of Trey Lewds 'Drop the Line', fire extinguisher & door. From his interest in sound phenomena and harmonics Rabe was able to make one of the most deep, moving pieces of sustained sound generated in this formative era of minimalist electronic composition. Initially reissued on Dexters Cigar in 1997 and now available on Important with expanded packaging including archival materials furnished by the composer.
Amplified infinity.' 'My interest in the makeup of various sound phenomena began many years ago.
The basic physical preconditions were familiar to me, but I wanted to experience the components of the sound with my hearing. I attempted to hear into the different sounds in order to grasp the components that made them up. I experienced how the overtones in a tone sounding on the piano change slowly as they die away. I also attempted to grasp the brittle arpeggio of formants that arises when a vowel is slowly changed at a particular pitch. I also tried, as far as possible, to train my hearing to tease out the complex processes that occur at the origin of sound.
About 85% of the material is made up of electronically generated tones, which however are never present in their static, original form. Each partial has been specially treated in itself, which can at times yield a very rich result. Was created in the late summer of 1967, and was realized by me in the electronic studio of the Swedish Radio. The piece was presented for the first time in the same year as part of a collective evening performance (Signery) in the Stockholm Radio Hall by Jan Bark, Bo Anders Persson and myself.'
- Folke Rabe. Artist: Title: Behold Secret Kingdom Format: CD Label: Country: Sweden Price: $14.50 'Behold Secret Kingdom is the first proper fullength release from Iowa Citys Raccoo-oo-oon after several limited cd-r/tape/vinyl releases (including cd reissues on Time Lag and Release The Bats).
The band spent the last year working with Behold Secret Kingdom, tremendous amounts of love and hard work has been put into this recording which now will be unleashed by Release The Bats! 8 new songs that takes the bands psychedelic and dynamic free-form punk from previous releases to new heights, this is definitely their most focused and perfected recording so far. Darker, denser and almost brutal at times, Behold Secret Kingdom is also the heaviest recording they have done. It only takes a few seconds into Black Branches and the mood is set for the rest of the album immediately. The stunning closer Tail At Prospect Peak could easiest be described as campfire-doom with its slow riffing, heavy use of percussion and chanted vocals (everything suddenly bursting out in a chaotic crescendo?). The trademark tribal-like drums is still present, as is the vocal drones and the furious saxophone swirls.
Behold Secret Kingdom is a epic masterpiece, there is really no other way to describe it. Chaotic and all over the place, yet so beautiful. Puts earlier comparisons to bands like Excepter and Animal Collective to a shame! Recorded by Mike Dixon in Bloomington, IN. Full colour digipack with the bands now well-known amazing artwork.' Artist: Title: Is Night People Format: CD Label: Country: Sweden Price: $16.00 'Swirling sax-and-effects-heavy free-form punk from Iowa Citys Raccoo-oo-oon. Is Night People is their first magical recording, 7 organic rituals creating a majestic outlet of neverending energy.
Beautiful cascades of manipulated vocals and layers of feedback melting together over sunny explosions of insane drumming. In the vein of Sun City Girls, Here Comes The Indian-era Animal Collective, Excepter etc. The cd comes in a letterpressed black Arigato Pak with gold ink made by Stumptown Printers and stunning art by Shawn Reed in the band.' - Release The Bats. Dark drifting psych rock, circular and uplifting, guitars weave around atmospheric electronics and R. Garbes signature propulsive drumming. Late dead encrusted shrine rock for the end times.
Art by Garbes/Reed.' -Night People. SOLD OUT Artist: Title: Raccoo-oo-oon Format: Double LP Label: Country: USA Price: $22.00 'All things must come to pass, if you love something set it free, its better to burn out than fade away, blah blah blah. No platitude can mask the permanent bummer of a favorite band breaking up in their prime, and such is the case with Iowa Citys most untamed civic treasure, feral-psych foursome Raccoo-oo-oon, who decided to dissolve this year after nearly half a decade of radical and galvanizing activity (tapes, tours, t-shirts, etc). Fortunately theyre generous sorts, so their parting gift to the fans/haters/planet is a vicious, thorny wilderness of endless, nameless songs heaved across four fried sides of black vinyl. Crawl a mile in their shoes.
As far as R.I.P. Band statements go, this self-titled monster is tough to beat, by far the most ambitious slabs of sounds the RAC pack has ever put together.
Doomed, desperate prog-rock flailings decay into hollow purgatories of dimly pulsing ambience, only to re-erupt into pissed percussion firestorms and experimental electricity. There are a few moments of Behold Secret Kingdom-style focus, but for the most part the mood remains raw and acidic, four souls on edge, backs to the crowd, channeling everything they have left inside. Its deconstruction time again. Nearly 80 minutes of music, mastered by Pete Swanson, housed in reinforced double LP jackets with Andy/Daren in repose photo artwork, plus a pro-printed 11x11 insert. Edition of 500.' - Not Not Fun.
Artist: Title: The Cave Of Spirits Forever Format: CD Label: Country: USA Price: $14.50 'hot new real cd reissue of the cdr version that went instantly out of print last year. Raccoo-oo-oon are one of those bands that can somehow shift between seemingly divergent genres, while the whole time keeping a sound very much their own.

The disc launches with a speed blasted, noise fueled, psych/punk rocker, slides into nearly grooving free-jazz territory, then into a gorgeous, buzzing/floating/tinkling bliss mantra, and thats just the first 3 tracks. Things continue unfolding from there, but the overall sound constantly slips back to the sort of mantric, damaged rock thud these guys are clearly fond of. A rather thrilling and quite great ride. Remastered by pete swanson (yellow swans) for extra punch. Packaged in a full color off-set printed tri-fold art paper cover, reproducing shawn reeds original eyeball frying art, inside and out. Adnos is a deeply meditative work of infinite depth and sensitivity; one of the high points of modern minimal electronic composition. Format: Double CD Label: Country: USA Price: $18.00 'Includes liner notes & archival photographs. 1970 was an important year in Eliane Radigues musical life since it was the year just before she acquired her ARP 2500 synthesizer.
Since 1967, she had been using the feedback as a material; feedback from two tape recorders reworked through intensive studio techniques: slowing down, alteration, superimposition, montage. SOLD OUT Artist: Title: Vice-Versa, Etc. Format: LP Label: Country: Italy Price: $26.00 'Alga Marghen very proudly presents a remastered version of Vice-Versa, Etc., an LP originally included in the first 400 copies of Eliane Radigues Feedback Works 2LP. Vice-Versa, Etc.
Was originally a small handmade box, signed and numbered and released on the occasion of a show at Lara Vincys gallery in 1970. The box contained a reel of magnetic tape and the instructions for use.
It indicates that all playback speeds are possible, forward or backward, as well as any combination of two channels, on several recorders, ad libitum. This LP presents two versions done by Emmanuel Hoelterbach following the indications of Eliane Radigue to the letter, respecting her composition methods. There is no doubt that Eliane Radigues vocabulary is based on observing and entering into dialog with the fundamental behavior of sounds: pulsing, beating, sustained, very light, a subtle and delicate evolution. When she moved from feedback sounds to the ARP synthesizer, she naturally continued the same music - a continuity where the original use of feedback sounds stands out for its cruder and more savage inner character. One could say that somehow its the very texture of the sounds, which leads the form of her compositions.
At the same time, this approach favors an intense sensuality in the listening.' - Alga Marghen. Artist: Title: Attention Patterns Format: Double LP/Book Label: Country: USA Price: $36.00 'Attention Patterns is a 2 LP set featuring new and archival compositions by Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Yoshi Wada and Sun Circle, as well as a 48-page booklet containing interviews with the composers and related texts.
This release brings together composers with shared affinities for long, slowly unfolding durations and unconventional, harmonic approaches to tuning. Each has contributed a full LP side to the compilation. Edition of 600. Pauline Oliveros Horse Sings from Cloud (Encore) is a live performance from 1977 that finds her at her most distilled, performing alone with her justly tuned accordion and voice. Eliane Radigues electronic work Biogenesis, from 1973, uses her ARP synthesizer and recordings of human heartbeats as its main constituents and is the only piece included on the LPs that has been previously released. Sound artist and instrument builder, Yoshi Wada, appears with Reed Modulations, a new work for harmonium, audio generators and bagpipe, made in collaboration with his son, Tashi Wada.
Greg Davis and Zach Wallace, better known as Sun Circle, have contributed For Yoshi Wada, an ecstatic and fitting tribute with its oddly tuned free reed drones and percussion. The accompanying booklet includes several of Oliveros Sonic Meditations - verbal scores that formed the basis for her concept of Deep Listening - and interviews with Radigue, Wada, and Sun Circle, as well as an in-depth article on collaborating with Radigue by cellist Charles Curtis. Attention Patterns was compiled by Che Chen (whose other outings as anthologist have included the no longer extant, O Sirhan, O Sirhan, a zine that counted Henry Flynt, Bruce McClure, Sir Richard Bishop, Sublime Frequencies, Jessica Rylan, Animal Collective, Deerhoof, Jorge Boehringer and others among its featured) and is a co-release between his new imprint, Black Pollen Press, and Important Records. Two LPs, 48-page booklet, letter-pressed sleeves.'
SOLD OUT Artist: Title: Hazel Format: LP Label: Country: USA Price: $16.00 'Slowly drifting over the horizon, into the realms of Mexican Summer, comes Radio People. The return of Cleveland, Ohio man Sam Goldbergs cosmic synthesizer project is cause for fanfare of the most blissful kind – his music is, after all, a beautiful, hovering behemoth worthy of celebration. Since 2007 Goldberg has become renowned for his slew of highly collectable cassettes, CDRs and VHS on such labels as the Emeralds-curated Wagon and Gneiss Things, Weird Forest, 905 Tapes, Catholic Tapes and Tusco/Embassy, while also finding the time to found his own prolific imprint Pizza Night. Radio People appeared in 2009, producing a similar cascade of material, with Digitalis Records carefully gathering a selection and committing them to vinyl a year later. Mexican Summer is proud to contribute to this legacy with his new album Hazel, a collection of dream-like soundscapes, billowing clouds of synthesizers cut with poignant razor drones, expansive sweeping melodies and suspended harmonies.
When brought out of reverie, Radio People pushes ever onward with Italo and Kosmische pulses, concise percussion and sombre vocals, but when left for a while it is always happy to melt back into music for drooping eyelids and swollen hearts. Intergalactic drama at its best and most essential. 750 pressed.' - Mexican Summer Artist: Title: s/t Format: LP Label: Country: USA Price: $19.00 'Limited to 500 copies only. Radio People is a project from Ohio-stalwart Sam Goldberg. After a handful of solo releases under his own name on Weird Forest, 905 Tapes and the Emeralds-run Wagon & Gneiss Things labels, he debuted Radio People on an ultra-limited self-titled cassette on his own Pizza Night imprint.
At that point, there was no way back and the only move was to push forward with this cosmic beast. Two more short-run tapes followed and it was clear that this new chemically-imbalanced synthesizer project wasnt just a quick hit one-off. Radio People is here to stay. On this, his debut vinyl effort, Goldberg has compiled the best elements of those three, long-gone cassettes. This Dubplates & Mastering-cut slab of wax is the strongest statement Goldberg has made, proving his talent lies far beyond ambient soundscapes and well into the world of pop-infused synthesizer chaos and Kraut-inspired composition. Major hooks sit alongside dense planetary drones.
Goldberg pairs rivers of polysynth tracery with deep shards of droning organs, minimal live percussion and a whole host of drum machine backbone. This really is the best of both worlds. Melodies suck you in, beats get your head bobbing and then youre sucked down a complex tonal wormhole of introspective loops and ambient synthscapes. Pop song frameworks nestle themselves neatly beside somber soundscapes, sometimes jumping back and forth in the same track. Barely-there vocals foil the stasis, leaving the listener guessing and wondering if theres a ghost in the mix. Radio Peoples embracing of simple Kraut rhythms to underscore the catchy, kosmische wanderings give this music an accessibility not present in much of Goldbergs previous work.
It crosses boundaries and comes back and shows still-untapped wells of talent and ideas in Goldbergs bag of tricks.' Reminds me of somebody quoted in Goldmine Magazine long ago: 'How many times do they expect me to buy my collection?' DAIS RECORDS ANNOUNCES RE-ISSUES + RARITES FROM LEGENDARY NEW ZEALAND POST PUNK OUTFIT NOCTURNAL PROJECTIONS - COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS LP INMATES IN IMAGES LP OUT APRIL 27 Formed in Stratford, near New Plymouth, New Zealand in 1981, Nocturnal Projections was the explosive project of legendary and prolific brothers Graeme and Peter Jefferies (who would later form This Kind of Punishment before launching their solo careers), who along with friends Brett Jones and Gordon Rutherford, created some of the most energetic and influential avant-garde punk rock to emerge from the country. Largely ignored during their tenure (but revered and referenced in the years after their breakup) and often compared to UK contemporaries like Joy Division, Comsat Angels, The Fall, or Wire, Nocturnal Projections stood well apart - never enjoying the luxuries of unlimited studio time, music videos or international fame, the NPs possessed a driven, rough-hewn serrated edge that cut through the lot comparisons to the UK post-punk exports of the era. They were ahead of their time, completely singular, and for those that had the benefit of seeing Nocturnal Projections play live – formative, with a dedicated cult following to this day.
As residents of New Plymouth’s Lion Tavern during their first year as a band, they perfected their soaring, impactful live set locally (often as the only band, without an opener and 3 hours to fill!) before heading off to Auckland in January of 1982, performing with bands like The Fall, John Cooper Clarke, and New Order at venues like The Mainstreet Cabaret, The Rumba Bar and Reverb Room. The band recorded three EPs at Stebbing Studios in Auckland: The self-titled and self-released 7” single released April 1st of 1982, with the “Another Year” 12” EP following later that year. Their self-titled three song 12” was recorded in 1983, and released by the band posthumously that June, after the band called it quits.
The Jefferies would move on and regroup with Rutherford and sound engineer Andrew Frengley shortly after the NPs fell apart to work under the This Kind of Punishment banner. Complete Studio Recordings comprises the three original Nocturnal Projections studio records, direct to board recordings on a 24 track and not a synthesizer to be found! This release is a crucial part of New Zealand’s punk history, remastered and collected for existing fans and new audiences. Frantic and fast punk anthems like Nerve Ends In Power Lines, Isn’t That Strange, and In Purgatory are a shot in the gut, while slower, more introspective tracks like Difficult Days and You’ll Never Know reveal what the band had in store later with TKP. Nocturnal Projections are hard to pin down: bright, slashing, and prominent guitars with driving solid basslines and drums in tight lockstep, all with Peter Jefferies’ urgent signature baritone vocals soaring alongside – the result is still perhaps the most energetic, unique, and fresh music to ever emerge from the post-punk scene.

Inmates In Images pulls the best of the best from board recordings of live sets between 1981 and 1983, including the never-before-released tracks: “Blank Faces” and “Late Night”, along with unheard versions of previously released songs - and includes Peter and Graeme’s song “Walk In A Straight Line”, written in October of 1980 and originally intended for their earlier band The Plastic Bags. We were better live. If you went to the shows that’s when you really got Nocturnal Projections. What you have here is an attempt to document those performances. Much debate, trawling of archives, and careful re-mastering has gone into this set. If you weren’t there, then this is probably as close as you’re gonna get to it.
If you were, then I hope this album brings back some memories. Certainly works for me. Peter Jefferies. Late Night ―, Wednesday, 28 March 2018 23:46 (four months ago). Chris Squire’s FISH OUT OF WATER Limited Edition Boxed Set & 2CD Set To Be Released April 27, 2018! Official limited edition deluxe boxed set includes 2CD, 2DVD, 1LP and 2×7-inch singles! Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of an official limited edition deluxe boxed set of Yes founder CHRIS SQUIRE’s legendary 1975 solo album FISH OUT OF WATER. Recorded in the late Spring and Summer of 1975 whilst Yes was on hiatus as members recorded their respective solo albums, FISH OUT OF WATER was a breath-taking work, and equal in standard to any Yes album in terms of sheer invention and creativity. The album was essentially a collaboration between Chris Squire and his friend Andrew Pryce Jackman, a gifted arranger who had been a member of The Syn, Squire’s pre-Yes group. The sessions saw contributions from former Yes drummer BILL BRUFORD, Yes keyboard player PATRICK MORAZ and noted musicians MEL COLLINS and JIMMY HASTINGS.
Released in November 1975, FISH OUT OF WATER was a Top 30 chart hit in the UK and made the US Billboard Top 75 album chart, going on to sell nearly 500,000 copies worldwide. The highlight of this limited edition deluxe boxed set is a stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound mix (exclusive to this set on an NTSC / Region Free DVD), along with a new stereo mix, from the original multi-track master tapes by JAKKO JAKSZYK and a new re-master of the original 1975 mix by Paschal Byrne. FISH OUT OF WATER also includes four bonus tracks of the single edits of “Lucky Seven” and “Silently Falling”, along with both sides of the 1981 single by CHRIS SQUIRE and ALAN WHITE; “Run With the Fox” and “Return of the Fox” (appearing on CD for the first time). The boxed set also includes a replica 180 gram gatefold LP with poster of FISH OUT OF WATER (mastered and cut from the original tapes at Abbey Road studios), along with two seven inch singles of “Lucky Seven” b/w “Silently Falling” and “Run With the Fox” b/w “Return of the Fox”, both in picture sleeves. To complete the content is a visual DVD (NTSC / Region Free) featuring the 1975 FISH OUT OF WATER promotional film featuring the songs “Hold Out Your Hand” and “You By My Side”, along with a 2006 interview with Chris Squire conducted by Jon Kirkman and a 2006 audio commentary by Chris Squire. Finally, the set also contains a 36-page book with an essay by Sid Smith featuring exclusive interviews with BILL BRUFORD, PATRICK MORAZ, GREGG JACKMAN and JAKKO JAKSZYK.
Also available as a 2CD set which features a stunning new Stereo mix from the original multi-track master tapes by JAKKO JAKSZYK and a new re- master of the original 1975 mix by Paschal Byrne. Always justly proud of his first solo album, it was Chris Squire’s long held wish that a 5.1 Surround mix would be undertaken of the work someday.

Eh dunno if I've ever heard exotica, but this is Numero so maybe Numero Group’s Technicolor Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies & Other Exotic Delights 3 LP in stores 5/25 In the late ’50s to the mid-’60s, somewhere between Elvis’ last Ed Sullivan Show appearance and the Beatles’ U.S. Invasion, a strange musical movement surfaced in America seemingly from some fantasy island in the South Pacific.
Known as Exotica, the music blended together wildly disparate musical styles — easy listening and lounge; jazz and surf — to concoct a fizzy colorful sound that felt both marvelously mysterious and delightfully fun. While originally a rather short-lived phenomenon, Exotica (and its stars, such as Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Esquivel, Yma Sumac, and Les Baxter), has never disappeared from the cultural radar. Come to think of it, maybe Brian Wilson was tripping to some of this. More from Drag City.on June 22nd.John Renbourn Live in Kyoto 1978 comes from a tape made by a private collector who promoted shows for many years in Japan - and taped them immaculately! They came to light after his passing, and one of the many performances deemed release-worthy was this solo show at a coffeehouse in Kyoto by one of the legends of British folk - and really, of roots music in the 20th century! Playing in a style often dubbed 'folk baroque' John Renbourn busted out as a part of a duo with Bert Jansch in the early 60s, after which the two formed Pentangle. Later, John made records with his own John Renbourn Band as well as with Stephen Grossman and as a solo performer.
His unique combination of traditional folk, blues, world and early music, all played with feathery-yet-incisive fingers sustained him for over five decades of making records and performing. Live in Kyoto 1978 catches him on a typically sweet evening, in front of an avid crowd whose ardor grows with each passing number, climaxing in a wizardly series of medleys that bring the house down. Beautifully recorded, and with liner notes from The Silence's Masaki Batoh, who was in attendance all those years ago, Live in Kyoto 1978 is a fresh testament to the genius style of John Renbourn. (And from a few years back, check Renbourn's remarkably adequately-recorded and well-preserved The Attic Tapes, which are also living room/crash pad tapes from hither and yon in early 60s etc., with traces of and finally a full sighting of Davey Graham; Beverly Martyn's in there too.) ―, Monday, 23 April 2018 01:59 (three months ago). THE CURE MIXED UP AND TORN DOWN Remastered 3-CD Deluxe Edition Featuring 16 Brand New Mixes By Robert Smith And 11 Rare Mixes From 1982-1990 Available June 15 From Rhino 2-LP 180-gram Vinyl Versions Also Available On The Same Day LOS ANGELES - With the Disintegration album and its accompanying global Prayer Tour, 1989 had delivered a triumphant end to the 80s, but the first year of the 90s found The Cure unexpectedly unsettled.
Determined to keep up the momentum of the band's ongoing success, but knowing there were internal tensions to address before heading back into the studio, Robert Smith decided on a different course of action; curating an album of the band's rarer 12' mixes. As work on Mixed Up progressed, Smith realized that some of The Cure's earlier remixes didn't stand up to the newer ones. Robert singles out Brian 'Chuck' New's dub style remix of 'Pictures Of You' as the one that inspired him to take a more adventurous path.
Smith notes, 'That mix turned the music on its head, but at the same time left the essential heart of the song intact. As soon as I heard it, I updated the entire Mixed Up plan. My revised ambition was to compile an album that was contemporary without being dated, immediate without being obvious, musically inspiring, rhythmically exciting and sonically great!'
Two tracks on the album, 'A Forest' and 'The Walk,' were not just remixed but entirely re-recorded, as the multi-track tapes for both songs had long been lost. Both songs were reconstructed in the studio with producer Mark Saunders, using original instruments and gear. The band convened over five days in June 1990 to record a new track for Mixed Up. After a certain amount of fraught experimenting with beats, loops and sequenced bass lines, Smith decided to change the vibe. A demo entitled 'PhaseAGE' that had previously been deemed 'too rock' was committed to tape as 'Never Enough' and was released as a single in September 1990. The 'Closer Mix' of 'Close To Me' soon followed this and both songs were accompanied by customarily deranged Tim Pope videos. With Mixed Up finally released, Smith felt he could at last move on, confident in a reenergized and reintegrated band.
Smith continues, 'The whole of 1990 was essentially spent emerging from the shadow of Disintegration, and we managed to do it in a creatively satisfying way; by the end of the year, I couldn't wait to start work on new songs for the next record.' Once the remaining 1981 to 1990 12' / extended mixes were compiled, Robert realized that there were too many for one CD and too few for two CD's. His solution was to deliver an entire disc of brand new mixes. 'I wanted a 3-disc package, but we didn't have enough 'historic' remixes - for a while I thought the 'extra-extras' CD would be Cure songs re-mixed by choice artists, rather than by choice re-mixers. That then got me thinking maybe I should have a go at one. So in early August 2017, I decided to experiment with Three Imaginary Boys. It is a pretty sparse multi-track; I pulled it apart at home and finished the initial re-mix in one session - and I really enjoyed the whole process,' says Smith.
By choosing favorite songs rather than the usual singles, one of Smith's objectives was to illustrate the variety of the Cure catalogue, and by October of 2017 working on songs in chronological release order, he had remixed entirely the 16 songs that appear on Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018. For the Torn Down cover, Robert decided on a self-portrait painted in oils during the summer of 1990 which was originally intended as the sleeve for Mixed Up. He chose Torn Down as the title for the 'extra-extras' album inspired by the way he had 'torn down' Never Enough, stripping the song back to resemble his original 1990 PhaseAGE demo. 'I felt it was a good way to bring the project back full circle.in a Mixed Up kind of way,' states Smith. The Cure's MIXED UP DELUXE EDITION will be available on June 15 as a 3CD set for ($24.98). Also available the same day, are the 2LP vinyl sets of Mixed Up ($34.98) and Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018 ($34.98).
Both albums have been Half Speed Mastered by Robert Smith and Tim Young at Metropolis Studios, London and are pressed on 180-gram vinyl and are housed in Gatefold Sleeves. The Breeders: 4AD Catalogue Back In Print On May 18 All of the Breeders’ previous albums – Pod, Last Splash, Title TK, and Mountain Battles – will be re-issued on vinyl on 18th May. Available to pre-order from today, this is the first time Pod and Last Splash will be released by 4AD in North America.
The Breeders continue to tour their latest album All Nerve with further European dates announced for November. The group will also play two shows before FYF Festival in July. Currently on the road in North America, The Breeders will tour the UK and Europe throughout the Spring and Summer. Pod, the 1990 debut featuring the line-up of Pixie’s Kim Deal, Throwing Muses’ Tanya Donelly, the Perfect Disaster’s Josephine Wiggs and Slint’s Britt Walford, was recorded by Steve Albini. Kurt Cobain listed the record as one of his top three favourite albums saying, “the way they structure the songs is totally unique.” Critically acclaimed when it came out, Pod’s legacy lives on – Pitchfork called it a “blissful mindfuck of a record,” and ranked it in their Best Albums of the 90s.
Last Splash was recorded in 1993 by what is now regarded as the ‘classic’ Breeders line-up of Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson. Including the twisted pop singles ‘Cannonball’ and ‘Divine Hammer’, it has become one of the defining albums of the 90s. 2002’s Title TK saw the band work with Steve Albini once more, with the Guardian saying it was “a welcome return to punky pop that knows how to flex some melodic muscle.” The album has been out of print on vinyl since its release. Fourth album Mountain Battles, a perfectly formed album of 13 miniatures in 36 minutes engineered by Steve Albini, was originally released in 2008. Like Title TK before it, Mountain Battles has been out of print since its release. All Nerve, the Breeders’ fifth studio album, saw the iconic line-up of Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson reunite for the first time since the release of the platinum-selling album Last Splash. Released earlier this year, critics and fans welcomed them back with open arms and they scored their highest chart positions – including top 10 in the UK – in 25 years ―, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 21:00 (three months ago).

Got a few of the Punk 45 comps but they got bunches of compilations I would like to check out. Have not yet checked out that Who at the Fillmore collection. Still curious but haven't gotten to the local store to pick it up yet. One of these days those Led Zeppelin Fillmore/Winterland recordings are going to come out. I got to figure that the bad blood between LZ and Bill Graham might be one historical reason why those recordings have been on ice and never really been formally released. They had them up online for a bit on that garage website, but that I think is it except for the bootlegs.

As I noted on the Who thread, Moon’s drums are poorly miked (roughly equivalent to half of the keys on Charlie Parker’s alto having gone missing), but the 33-minute “My Generation” is like John Fahey, Charles Mingus, Milford Graves, and Keith Rowe covering “Sister Ray.” ―, Saturday, 28 April 2018 23:23 (three months ago). Third Man's putting out Trout Mask Replica on vinyl: Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.
Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but for Vault Package #36 the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest — its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you’ve only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90’s, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts.
This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram fruitcake fish-scale colored vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling. The French-only 7-inch single of “Pachuco Cadaver” b/w “Wild Life” will also be included as part of this overreaching package. As the only single ever pulled from this admittedly dense album, this is the first time EVER that “Pachuco Cadaver” has been repressed and comes wonderfully housed in a replica glue-pocket picture sleeve and pressed on a white colored vinyl. ALL vinyl in this package is lovingly pressed at Third Man Pressing’s state-of-the-art plant in Detroit, Michigan for that extra-special attention to detail. Simmer down now! I was just listening to a mingus boot from the adams-pullen era and while entwistle may be the greatest bassist in rock i'd never confuse him with mingus!
Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit, but really it was Townshend’s playing that was heavily influenced by Mingus. He’s said that, among other things, the long acoustic passages in Tommy were inspired by Mingus solos. He even tried to get Mingus in the Tommy film, but Ken Russell nixed the idea, and the role went to Eric Clapton. ―, Sunday, 29 April 2018 03:38 (three months ago). Yeah I gotta hear that! One I missed last fall: reissue of PSF's oft-molten maiden comp, a wake-up call to Westword noizeheads ov yore-tell it, Marc Masters: The most immediately exciting material on Tokyo Flashback is drenched with fiery guitars and mammoth rhythms, mixed into a cacophonous lava pouring from speakers. High Rise, Marble Sheep & the Run-Down Sun’s Children, and Fushitsusha (whose first two albums on PSF, released before Tokyo Flashback, are legendary for their bleeding psych bombast) all stomp on the gas pedal until it breaks.
But there are other gears on Tokyo Flashback too: Ghost’s seance-like acoustics, White Heaven’s Blue Cheer-style string wrangling, Kousokuya’s slow-burning metal, and a closer by Fushitsusha’s Keiji Haino that consists solely of his harrowing vocal calisthenics. From ―, Sunday, 29 April 2018 16:32 (three months ago). From Northern Spy: A bunch of us purchased Marvin Pontiac’s Greatest Hits back in 1999 on CD, and some of us totally bought into the story: Marvin Pontiac was an enigmatic genius of modern music. He was the son of an African father from Mali and a white Jewish mother from New York. Having been killed by a bus, this was a posthumous collection. Jackson Pollock listened solely to Marvin.
Flea, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Iggy Pop, Beck, Angelique Kidjo, Mike Gordon and Michael Stipe were fans. John Lurie’s story was deeply amusing and his music was extraordinary.
The whole thing was characteristically ahead of its time and guaranteed to leave a permanent mark on your consciousness. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it still is and still does! We’re blissfully psyched to bring this music to vinyl for the first time for Record Store Day and to compact disc for a one-time pressing. Check out the music if you haven’t already and please help spread the word.
The package, co-designed by John Lurie and Adam Downey, features a detail of Lurie's painting The sky is falling. I am learning to live with it. We also asked John Lurie to take over our weekly Spotify playlist called Office Ephemera. “I have never used Spotify and don’t know what Record Store Day is, but I am releasing Marvin Pontiac’s Greatest Hits on vinyl with the people at Northern Spy. They asked me to make a playlist. They are nice people, so I did it.” – John Lurie Read a feature by Marc Masters in the Washington Post here.
For a long time, John Lurie was everywhere. If you cared about American independent art and culture between the mid-’70s and the late ’90s, you probably knew about his acting in films such as “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Paris, Texas,” and “Down by Law.” Or maybe as the host of his absurdist nature show “Fishing With John.” Or perhaps you heard his music as the composer of scores for “Get Shorty” and “Mystery Train,” or as the leader and saxophone player for his raucous jazz group, the Lounge Lizards. During this prolific run, one of Lurie’s ventures was a little less visible.
In 1999, his record label Strange and Beautiful released “Greatest Hits,” by someone called the Legendary Marvin Pontiac. According to press materials, Pontiac was a hard-luck drifter who made music in Mali, Chicago and Detroit before being killed by a bus in 1977. But since the album included a supporting cast of Lurie’s fellow New York musicians and featured a singing voice that sounded a lot like him, it wasn’t hard to guess who Pontiac actually was. RELEASE INFO CATALOG #: NS 097 VINYL: Record Store Day Exclusive, Available only in stores April 21st, 2018 CD: in stores June 22nd, 2018 PRE-ORDER CD: northern spy website, bandcamp BACKGROUND MARVIN PONTIAC was hit and killed by a bus in June 1977 ending the life of one of the most enigmatic geniuses of modern music. He was born in 1932, the son of an African father from Mali and a white Jewish mother from New Rochelle, New York.
The father's original last name was Toure but he changed it to Pontiac when the family moved to Detroit, believing it to be a conventional American name. Marvin's father left the family when Marvin was two years old. When his mother was institutionalized in 1936, the father returned and brought the young boy to Bamako, Mali where Marvin was raised until he was fifteen. The music that he heard there would influence him forever. At fifteen Marvin moved by himself to Chicago where he became versed in playing blues harmonica. At the age of seventeen, Marvin was accused by the great Little Walter of copying his harmonica style. This accusation led to a fistfight outside of a small club on Maxwell Street.
Losing a fight to the much smaller Little Walter was so humiliating to the young Marvin that he left Chicago and moved to Lubbock, Texas where he became a plumber's assistant. Not much is known about him for the next three years. There are unsubstantiated rumors that Marvin may have been involved in a bank robbery in 1950. In 1952, he had a minor hit for Acorn Records with the then controversial song 'I'm a Doggy.'
Oddly enough, unbeknownst to Marvin and his label, he simultaneously had an enormous bootleg success in Nigeria with the beautiful song 'Pancakes.' His disdain and mistrust of the music business is well documented and he soon fell out with Acorn's owner, Norman Hector. Although approached by other labels, Marvin refused to record for anyone unless the owner of the label came to his home in Slidell, La and mowed his lawn. Reportedly Marvin's music was the only music that Jackson Pollack would ever listen to while he painted, this respect was not reciprocated.
In 1970 Marvin believed that he was abducted by aliens. He felt his mother had had a similar unsettling experience, which had led to her breakdown. He stopped playing music and dedicated all of his time and energy to amicably contacting these creatures who had previously probed his body so brutally. When he was arrested for riding a bicycle naked down the side streets of Slidell, La, it provided a sad but clear view of Marvin's coming years. Marvin held the tribal belief that having a photograph taken of yourself could steal your soul, thus these candid shots are the only ones known to exist.
In 1971 he moved back to Detroit where he drifted forever and permanently into insanity. WHAT OTHER GREAT ARTISTS HAVE SAID ABOUT MARVIN PONTIAC. Krautkramer usm 25 operating manual.
'In my formative years, as an aspiring bass player, there was nothing I listened to more than Marvin Pontiac.' -Flea 'A dazzling collection! It strikes me that Pontiac was so uncontainably prescient that one might think that these tracks had been assembled today.' -David Bowie 'A Revelation.' -Leonard Cohen 'This record has changed my life.'
-John Lurie 'Marvin would kick your ass for nothing. A true genius, Marvin was a pure original.' -Iggy Pop 'The innovation and possibility in this music leaves me speechless.' -Beck 'Marvin is good.' -Angelique Kidjo '.beds of eerie, hypnotic, textural rhythm with that tragic voice of the American male floating on top, or actually below.' I haven't bought these because they've previously only been available as way overpriced CD/DVD or CD/Blu-Ray sets.
Xp Boy the brainy 80s NYC hipster rollcall of Marvin's musical attendants-'the downtown crowd,' as Lou Reed used to say-really takes me back, though they're a bit underemployed here, despite the alert, expert zigzag elevator groovage-underemployed compared to some other ventures, though not quantity-wise, would be better at half the length-about 25 minutes-or less (an excellent bonus EP w Lounge Lizards box, for inst). 'Small Car' gets him out of the neighborhood or ward for a few minutes: it's about tiny farmers with 'inch-long dogs' who are happy but one night they start to wonder where the stars come from, so they get in their cars made from cans and drive and drive, happy in the starlight and saying, 'Hi farmer' to each other, 'til they come to the giants, us, or people our size, and agree that they don't belong here/there, so get in their can-cars and drive back home, but they enjoyed the trip and they're happy ever after to remember the night. Otherwise, in the usual fedoraheadspace, my fave line is 'I put a piece of fur in my shoe to hide it from you. ' Last track, 'No Kids,' has an intriguingly more serious vibe, or back and forth, coulda used a few more like that (although I kept getting interrupted, took most of the day so far to hear it all, so some may take hold later). ―, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:10 (three months ago). Numero Group announces Ectotrophia, the first authoritative compilation of American dream pop artist Happy Rhodes' earliest recordings from 1984-87, out June 29 The first authoritative compilation of American dream pop artist Happy Rhodes, whose singular songwriting and four-octave vocal range emanated from the pastoral confines of upstate New York in the 1980s.
Her melding of classical music influences with synthesizer and acoustic guitar, and her enchanting and idiosyncratic singing, are favorably compared to heralded English chanteuse Kate Bush. Fans of such artistic pop music would be remiss to overlook Rhodes’s similarly remarkable and otherworldly sonic transmissions, traversing tales of dreamers, outsiders, lovers and other lovely and terrifying creatures born of a wellspring of wild creativity and bold imagination. Affectionately remastered from the original tapes, Ectotrophia gathers essential songs from Rhodes’s mid-'80s salad days, many written when she was just a teenager—wildly ahead of her time and unafraid to bare her soul to regional audiences, the ectophiles who’d eventually coin an entire subgenre of pop music in her honor.

South African kwaito jazz A future-facing hybrid of jazz, broken beat and afro-synth. Composer and pianist Moses Taiwa Molelekwa’s 2000 album Genes And Spirits has been reissued on vinyl for the first time by Matsuli Music. Released a year before his death at the age of 29, Molelekwa forged a unique international sound with a band that included Cuban legend Chucho Valdez, Cameroonian drummer Cuba Brice Wassy and Brazilian singer and fusion star Flora Purim. The result is an album of genre-defying dexterity, created by a process of “finding a range of rhythmic alternatives”, of which the jazzy broken beat of second track ‘Spirits Of Tembisa’ is a particularly strong example. The album will be reissued ion gatefold vinyl by Matsuli Music, who have already been responsible for reviving South African jazz gems by Batsumi, Black Disco and Ndikho Xaba And The Natives.

From “the James Brown meets Fela Kuti of Sudan.” Habibi Funk has launched a new series showcasing little-known music from Sudan’s jazz scene, starting with the first ever release of Kamal Keila’s album Muslims and Christians. The label discovered Keila while on a recent trip to curate a collection of Arabic zouk tracks, where Keila’s name repeatedly came up in conversations. For decades in Sudan, radio stations were not allowed to play label recordings on air, so stations hosted live sessions for musicians. To prevent artists from self-releasing these sessions they rarely received copies of the tapes; however Keila managed to attain the studio reels of two, 5-track performances from the 12th of August 1992. According to the label, “some of the songs were already written in the 1970s and have been part of Keila’s sets ever since, with only small changes for contemporary references in the lyrics and musically sometimes adopting to “new” sounds here and there.” “Both sessions stand as a testament to how he stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics.” Muslims and Christians includes Keila’s ‘Al Asafir’ which appeared on Habibi Funk 007: An Eclectic Selection of Music From The Arabic World, alongside nine previously unreleased songs.
The series will continue with albums by The Scorpions and Sharhabeel, forthcoming later this year. More info, audio: ―, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:02 (three months ago). A CERTAIN RATIO have announced the final phase in their studio album reissue series. Sextet (1982) will be released on orange vinyl in textured sleeve replicating the original Factory release, Change The Station (1997) will be released on double blue vinyl and Mind Made Up (2008) is out on double purple vinyl.
Change The Station and Mind Made Up will appear on vinyl for the first time. CD and digital copies will also be available on July 27. This is the latest installment in an ongoing collaboration with Mute and follows the release of The Graveyard And The Ballroom, To Each and Force.
This Friday will see the release of I’d Like To See You Again, Good Together, Up In Downsville and ACR:MCR. Sextet (1982) - Dark and brooding, yet bright and funky, Sextet is a firm favorite amongst the critics. The album saw A Certain Ratio refine the experimentation of the first two albums and deliver a masterpiece that is as off-kilter and weird as it is commercial and pop. Listen to “Crystal” here. Change The Station (1986) - An abstract album that sees A Certain Ratio bring the funk to laid back ambience in a way that only they could. The party is still there and it's more hypnotic than ever. Listen to “Yeah Boy” here.
Mind Made Up (2008) - To date, this is A Certain Ratio’s last album release, and one that sees them explore pop closer than ever before - short sharp bursts of classic sing-a-long post-pop funk. Listen to “Bird to the Ground” here. A new compilation will follow later in the year and various box sets will be released in 2019 to mark the 40th anniversary of the first releases by the band. Known for their carnival atmosphere live performances, A Certain Raito have been playing blistering sold out shows throughout 2017 and 2018. A new series of dates have been announced. See below for an itinerary.
A Certain Ratio embraced the ethic and culture of the late seventies post-punk explosion, but sounded like nothing else around them and refused to fit in. Formed in 1978, the band had various members throughout their career and a core line-up comprised of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson. Hailed universally as pioneers of what became known as “punk funk” thanks to the success of “Shack Up” on both sides of the Atlantic, their sound is not easily pigeon-holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic.
They have gone on to influence generations of musicians including Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, Happy Mondays, Franz Ferdinand, ESG, Factory Floor and Andrew Weatherall. The Guardian’s Dave Simpson paid tribute to the band, once described as “James Brown on acid” in a recent Cult Heroes piece: “Once you start listening to A Certain Ratio, it’s difficult to stop”. For a look inside the band’s early days, watch the inspiring short film Tribeca, directed by Michael Shamberg, here.
